Frequently Asked Questions

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art with an emphasis on grappling - ground fighting - through the use of joint locks and leverage. The techniques promote the idea that a smaller, weaker person can defeat a stronger opponent.

What makes your school different from all the other martial arts schools in the area?

Head Instructor Roberto Kaelin is the only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in the Southlake-Keller area. We opened in May of 2007 and have a fantastic student base. Our school is a family-friendly, non-intimidating environment.

Our unique kids program is based on the idea that learning should be fun! Kids will conquer challenging obstacle courses, learn effective offensive and defensive techniques, and will be learning in a clean facility with their peers.  We have many kids enrolled in our program that have had bad or boring experiences with other martial arts in the past. Our school is designed for kids to develop confidence, make new friends, and to have fun while learning a martial art that is beyond the typical “stand in a line, punch, kick, yell, repeat.”

For adults, we have a great Jiu-Jitsu family that is always willing to help each other out, whether on or off the mat. No matter what your age, fitness level, or prior experience – all students are here to learn and grow as a team. Our academy is a relaxed environment – for adults, Roberto rolls (spars) will all of his students be them white or black belts. Additionally, our upper belts are always willing to help out new students and questions are always encouraged!

How does the belt system work?

For adults, the belt system progression is white, blue, purple, brown, black, and black w/red stripe. Traditionally, adults do not test for rank. Belts are earned as Roberto sees you progressing. Because he is teaching and training with his students in class, Roberto is able to closely monitor his students’ progress and rank them accordingly.

On average, it takes 8-10 years to achieve the rank of black belt. The rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu takes longer to achieve as compared to other arts because of the vast knowledge of techniques and dedication required to earn this rank.

Does that mean it will take 8-10 years to learn to effectively defend myself?

No - when rolling with brand new students that have little to no training, you will see how the average person on the street will react in a confrontation – with your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques, you will have the upper hand in the fight.
