Frequently Asked Questions

Does Jiu-Jitsu work in the real world?

Yes. Most street fights end up on the ground. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is specifically designed so that the smaller, weaker person can defeat a larger, stronger opponent using leverage and technique. For the best examples of Jiu-Jitsu and how it is applied against bigger opponents or other martial arts practitioners, check out Royce Gracie’s fights during the original UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships).

Jiu-Jitsu is an amazing self-defense tool for women who want to learn how to effectively defend themselves. By training with other women and men in our facility, you will see how these techniques work on people of all sizes should you ever need to use the skills learned outside of the academy.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rolling/sparring is unique in that the techniques learned can be applied at almost full-strength on a daily basis. Unlike many striking arts, Jiu-Jitsu’s effectiveness is tested and realized every time you train.

Do I need to be in shape before joining?

Absolutely not.  The best way to get in shape for Jiu-Jitsu is to get on the mat and train Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu is based in core-muscle training, so be prepared to sweat and have the best overall workout around!

What if I don’t have any prior martial arts experience?

No problem! Many of our adult students started with us as beginners. We also have wrestlers, former karate students, and students who had not practiced martial arts since they were kids.

How much does it cost to sign up?

Everyone is welcome to two free classes and we do not have any registration fees. Please call/email for prices as the rates for kids, adults, BJJ classes, and MMA classes vary. We have family discounts, law enforcement discounts, and a referral program.

If you find a price better in the area, we will beat any Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA school’s price (depending on the number of classes offered per week and their level of teaching – for example, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue, purple, or brown belt instructor’s prices will be less expensive as compared to a black belt’s rates).

I have been researching other martial arts schools - the more expensive programs must have better instruction, right?

Absolutely not. We are firm believers that a school can provide quality, professional instruction at a reasonable price.  Many programs in the area require the purchase of overpriced sparring gear, outrageous testing fees for kids, and long-term contracts. We are up front about all monthly dues and make joining our school easy. There will be no surprises when it comes to your dues each month!
