Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to purchase once I join?

All Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students are required to purchase a gi (uniform) if they do not own one already. We have uniforms at the school available for purchase that include the top, pants, belt, and school patch.

What will my child learn?

Our main focus is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, we want the kids in our program to be well-rounded in the martial arts. Having earned black belts in Karate, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Roberto has expertise and vast credentials that cannot be found at any other martial arts school in the area. Kids will learn the striking and defensive techniques used in Karate and Muay Thai Kickboxing, takedowns/throws from Judo, and the ground fighting techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids?

Absolutely. Safety is our number one priority when it comes to your child. During class, kids are paired up with someone their size and experience level. Our kids classes are divided up by age so you child is learning with his/her peers and someone their size. Also, we have just as many girls enrolled in our kids classes as boys – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone!

In our program, kids are taught how to control an opponent, how to gain a dominant position in a confrontation, and how to defend themselves from punches and kicks. Kids are also taught submissions (joint locks, chokes) in a very closely monitored environment.

Our students are aware that these techniques are to be used only in class or if their life is in danger. Submissions are not to be practiced on siblings, friends, schoolmates...or the family pet.

My child has asthma, attention deficit disorder (ADD, ADHD), or behavioral issues - Can he/she participate?

For students with asthma, we recommend checking with your child’s doctor before starting any kind of sports activity. We currently have children enrolled in our classes with asthma and and take extra precautions to make sure they are participating comfortably. For kids with behavioral or attention issues, our program is designed to keep them focused and having fun, while teaching them how to follow directions, respect their peers, and achieve their goals.

When can my child get his/her black belt?

Unlike other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not award black belts to children.

Children that receive black belts at a young age in other arts are often sold a false sense of security - the idea that they can take on any opponent because they have a black belt. Our program is designed to give children and parents a clear idea of what their child can do when it comes to defending themselves.

Tradionally, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students may earn an adult blue belt at the age of 16. Until then, our kids participate in a progressive belt system and earn patches for high testing scores to keep them motivated until they qualify for adult belts.
